The 75% Rule, Explained
- •Most Indian universities (UGC/AICTE-affiliated) require 75% attendance to sit for exams.
- •Attendance % = (classes attended ÷ classes held) × 100.
- •At a 75% requirement, every class you miss takes 3 attended classes to offset.
- •Some colleges count condonation (medical leave) separately — the calculator shows your raw percentage.
The Real Problem This Solves
Every student does this math badly in their head: "I'm at 78%, I can skip tomorrow… right?" Then mid-semester the portal shows 74.6% and suddenly it's a debarment notice.
The trap is that missing a class hurts twice — your attended count stays still while total classes keep growing. This calculator tells you exactly how many classes you can still miss, or exactly how many you must attend in a row to climb back.
How the Safe-Bunk Math Works
Your current percentage is simply attended ÷ held × 100. The planner then solves two questions: how many future classes can you miss while staying at or above the requirement, and if you're below it, how many consecutive classes you must attend to recover.
Example: Aman has attended 70 of 90 classes — 77.78%. At a 75% requirement he can miss 3 more classes (70/93 = 75.27%); a 4th miss drops him to 74.47%. His friend at 60 of 90 (66.67%) must attend the next 30 classes straight just to touch 75% — recovery is brutally slow, which is why the buffer matters.
| Attended / Held | Current % | At 75% requirement |
|---|---|---|
| 70 / 90 | 77.78% | Can miss 3 more classes |
| 68 / 90 | 75.56% | Can miss 0 — no margin |
| 60 / 90 | 66.67% | Must attend next 30 classes straight |
Frequently Asked Questions
How is attendance percentage calculated?
Classes attended divided by total classes held, times 100. If you attended 70 out of 90 classes, your attendance is 77.78%. Some colleges compute it per subject rather than overall — check which one your institution enforces.
How many classes can I bunk and still keep 75%?
The formula is (attended ÷ 0.75) − total classes held, rounded down. The calculator does this for any requirement percentage and updates as you enter your numbers.
My attendance is below 75%. Can I still recover?
Usually yes, but it is slower than students expect: from 66.67% (60 of 90), you need 30 consecutive classes to reach 75%. Whether that is possible depends on how many classes remain in the semester — start immediately and stop missing any.
Do medical certificates or duty leave count toward attendance?
That depends on your institution. Many colleges allow condonation of 5-10% for documented medical grounds or official duties (sports, NCC), but it is granted at their discretion. Treat the 75% raw figure as your safe target.
