The Real Problem This Solves

Group trips and shared flats always end the same way — a pile of UPI screenshots, someone remembering wrong, and an awkward "wait, who owes what?" conversation.

This calculator tracks who paid for what and works out the fewest possible payments needed to settle everyone up, so you're not chasing five different people for five different amounts.

How the Settlement Is Calculated

Every expense is split among the people involved — equally, by exact amount, or by percentage. Each person's net balance is what they paid minus their fair share. The calculator then matches the biggest "owes" against the biggest "gets back" repeatedly until every balance reaches zero, so instead of everyone paying everyone, you get the smallest possible number of transfers.

Example: On a 3-day Goa trip, Rahul pays ₹9,000 for the hotel, Priya pays ₹3,000 for cabs, and Aman pays ₹1,500 for meals — split equally three ways (₹4,500 fair share each). Instead of six separate payments, the calculator works out that Aman just pays Rahul ₹3,000 and Priya pays Rahul ₹1,500 — settled in two transfers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the "fewest payments" settlement worked out?

The calculator nets out everyone's balance (what they paid minus their fair share), then repeatedly matches the largest debtor with the largest creditor until every balance reaches zero. This debt-simplification approach is the same one used by expense-splitting apps.

Can I split a bill unequally?

Yes. Choose "Exact Amounts" to enter what each person owes directly, or "By Percentage" to split proportionally, alongside the default equal split.
