The Real Problem This Solves
The same CGPA means a different percentage depending on which formula your board or university uses, and mixing them up is an easy way to misreport your score on a job or admission form.
This calculator applies the exact published formula for CBSE, VTU, and Anna University, or lets you enter your own institution's multiplier if it isn't one of those three.
How Each Formula Works
Most Indian conversions are a straight multiplier on your CGPA; a few, like VTU, subtract a fixed offset first.
Example: A CGPA of 8.5 converts to 80.75% under CBSE (8.5 × 9.5), 77.5% under VTU ((8.5 − 0.75) × 10), and 85% under Anna University's 2017 regulation (8.5 × 10) — three different results from the same CGPA, which is exactly why picking the right formula matters.
| CGPA | CBSE (×9.5) | VTU ((CGPA−0.75)×10) | Anna University (×10) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7.0 | 66.5% | 62.5% | 70% |
| 8.5 | 80.75% | 77.5% | 85% |
| 9.5 | 90.25% | 87.5% | 95% |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do CBSE, VTU, and Anna University give different percentages for the same CGPA?
Each board or university publishes its own official conversion formula. CBSE uses a flat ×9.5 multiplier, VTU subtracts 0.75 before multiplying by 10, and Anna University (under its 2017 regulation) uses a flat ×10. They are not interchangeable — always use the formula your own institution has notified.
My university isn't CBSE, VTU, or Anna University. What do I do?
Select "Custom / Other University" and enter your institution's published multiplier — it is usually stated in your marksheet, official gazette, or university website under "CGPA to percentage conversion."
Can this calculator convert percentage back to CGPA?
Yes — use the "Percentage → CGPA" toggle at the top, which reverses the same formula for your selected board or university.
